Her Majesty the Queen is to officially open Europe’s largest out-door theatre, the Scarborough Open Air Theatre, when she visits the venue on Thursday 20th May 2010. In her first visit to Scarborough in 35 years, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be treated to the borough's own Royal Variety Performance; ‘Grains of Sand’ written by Chris Darling, hosted by local impresario Tony Peers and performed by Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre Out Reach group. Her Majesty will then be given an exclusive preview of the 6500 seater site before unveiling a plaque to mark the special occasion. The Scarborough Open Air Theatre hosts its first public performance on Friday 23rd July with a spectacular concert by two of the world’s biggest opera stars; José Carreras and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. The evening will be compared by the one and only Brian Blessed, with music from the Opera North Orchestra. This not to be missed opening gala show will be one of only two concert dates in the UK for José Carreras this year and will also be the first time that he & Dame Kiri have performed in concert together in the UK. Just Confirmed; Scarborough Open Air Theatre are proud to announce that the acclaimed Huddersfield Choral Society will also perform on the evening. The opening season’s programme offers something for the whole family with CBBC’s Justin Fletcher (Something Special) arriving with his all new show Justin Live on Sat 24 & Sun 25 July. On Sat 31st July The Open Air Theatre plays host to some of the 80’s finest performers including Boy George, Rick Astley and T’Pau as 80s Rewind hits the stage for a night celebrating the 80’s, followed by an exciting fireworks display. With more exciting announcements coming soon the Open Air Theatre’s renaissance is in full flow. Already announced for 17 - 19 September is the Scarborough 360 Extreme Sports festival.
