Film :: Ken Russell made his name as a film director with Elgar, a biography of the composer commissioned by the BBC in 1962. His reputation was later solidified with equally striking portrait of Bartok, Delius, Mahler and Debussy. This infrequently screened double-bill is an opportunity to catch Russell at his most inspired, as he approaches his subjects with intelligence and enthusiasm and delivers two masterful works. And the music is, of course, sublime.
