Monster's Ball
T0
Hank (Thornton) is a guard on Death Row, charged with attending the execution of a black convict. The convict's obese son is cared for by Leticia (Berry). A relationship begins that cuts across racial and emotional lines. What needs or desires drive the couple together? Hank's racism doesn't stop and Leticia's wounded life doesn't heal, yet all that seems outside the bubble of love which, maybe temporarily, keeps the white man and black woman from falling apart. A powerful, intimate, even gruelling film that nevertheless remains mysteriously uplifting throughout, especially Berry's complex role which deservedly won the Best Actress Oscar.
