In this moving tribute to the hidden victims of the madness of war, young French lieutenant Adrien suffers horrendous facial injuries when a bomb explodes near him in the first days of WWI. He spends the remainder of the war in hospital, undergoing countless operations and forming close bonds with the other patients.
