Forget the somewhat toothless 1970s attempts to translate one of the best-loved superheroes of all time to the big screen; this is the real deal and one of the cinematic events of the year. Peter Parker is an unassuming young student who develops unusual arachnid-like powers and agility after being bitten by a genetically modified spider. It's a thrilling, bravura exercise in filmmaking - the effects are of course superb - but perhaps the real source of success lies in the casting.
