Adrien is injured in the first days of the World War I in 1914 - and spends the entire war (5 years!) in a Paris hospital undergoing reconstructive surgery on his tattered face. He's carried through his ordeal by a spirited nurse, a quirky surgeon, the camaraderie and support of fellow patients and the memory of a lover. But he's still not prepared for what will happen when he gets out.
