Tunisia /France 2000 - subtitled. For 11 months of the year a number of men on the Tunisian island of Djerba must leave their families and work elsewhere. When they return - for what is known as the season of men - the intensity of their arrival creates problems, as well as solutions, for the wives and loved ones they have been forced to temporarily abandon. Said's wife Aicha is particularly unhappy because her husband won't let her leave the island unless she bears him a son. A beautifully atmospheric movie, made by one of the very few women working at a senior level in the Arab film industry, it is all the more remarkable that Moufida Tlati's film raises troubling questions about the limits of female freedom - especially amongst women themselves - even within one of the most arguably Westernised countries in the Arab world.
