USER (22Nov04): After going to the Brixton Academy last night to see the extremely talented Jill Scott, it has reinforced my respect and admiration, for this formidable black woman. Her performance was infallible, with an incredible vocal range. In addition, Jill Scott and the audience made a connection singing and clapping along to her renditions of popular songs on her album. The most profound moment in this concert or gathering was how the lump appeared in my throat when she expressed her, feeling of pain when talking about the tragic losses she experienced at 15 of her friends-crying on stage unheard of in certain celebrity circles. Especially during a performance!) However, in my eyes it was an emotion that has been absent from many artists and which added to her 'realness'. Jill Scott contextualised her songs giving a better understanding of what the songs were about. For example she sang 'Golden' as a celebration of her being brave and excepting of her freedom of expression. 'The fact is ( I need you)' was for the old african proverb : 'It takes a village/community to raise a child'. This concert was for me an exceptional, euphoric, epitome of someone who is beautifully human. 5
