'Woods-word, bean curd...' is the rhyme that 10-year-old Joan Woodsword's schoolmates tease her with because of her unusual surname. Joan doesn't really like going to school because of the three girls who pick on her. Besides, Joan prefers reading about the Middle Ages, witches and Joan of Orleans. When Joan gets into trouble at school she seeks help from some meerkats in the zoo. They make a prophecy and tell her that if she saves France and helps the King get his crown then all her problems will be solved. So Joan borrows a sword, helmet and shield and sets out for France.
