It was a dark and stormy night...! The Tinderbox is for everyone who likes to be told stories. Here are three tales both dark and comic, which will appeal to all ages. The Princess and the Pea leads us into The Flying Trunk which in its turn leads us into The Tinderbox, bringing us full circle. Hans Christian Andersen s stories are full of magic and loss, courage and deception, false witches and true princesses. And, of course, three big dogs. The princess can t sleep. There s something uncomfortable under the mattress, and it s just as uncomfortable however many mattresses they pile on. So they tell her stories, to help her sleep. They tell her about the amazing flying trunk. They tell her about the soldier who was returning from the wars when a witch asked him to fetch a tinderbox from a hollow tree. And the stories come to life as they are told. With the princess, we ll see kings and queens, innkeepers and soldiers, young and old, giant dogs and plenty of magic. A large cast of characters, coming and going and never once falling over each other. The tales flow into each other to make one rumbustious whole.
