Royal Geographical Society Lecture. At 37 Chris has led a life full of remarkable experiences. After leaving the army Chris joined the HALO Trust, the mine-clearance charity. Kidnapped in Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge, escaping only to be blown-up by a mine in a supposedly clear area of Mozambique. The explosion cost him his lower right leg and right arm. He taught his shattered body to walk, then run, and less than a year later ran the London marathon, raising money for land mine victims. He has since completed more than 15 marathons, including running 137 miles across the Sahara and 135 miles across Death Valley in California.
