Secrets of the Mummies: Scientific studies on Death, Disease and Daily Life in Ancient Egypt

T0
A Study Day with Professor Rosalie David, OBE (Project Director), Professor Judith Adams, Mr John Denton, Dr Judith Miller, Dr Patricia Rutherford, Dr Caroline Wilkinson and Dr Patricia Lambert - Zazulak. The art and literature of ancient Egypt frequently provides a somewhat idealised picture of people s everyday life. However, the reality was often very different, and for the past couple of decades, a new study area - Biomedical Egyptology - has provided a more accurate perspective. In focusing on the human remains of the ancient Egyptians, it has been able to present new information about people s diseases, living conditions, funerary beliefs and customs, as well as their physical appearance. Since 1973, the Manchester Egyptian Mummy Project has pioneered the use of multidisciplinary techniques to investigate mummies, and these lectures by members of the Manchester team will demonstrate what the very latest advances in the interaction between biomedical science and Egyptology can tell us about the ancient Egyptians.
