Mountaineer and writer Stephen Venables has had an extraordinary life of adventure, which famously included his lonesome, costly (in frozen toes) night near the top of Everest after succeeding as the first Briton to summit the mountain without supplementary oxygen in 1988.

Everest - Summit of Achievement
In addition to being one of the best known mountaineers of his generation, Stephen Venables is a master storyteller and skilful photographer whose illustrated lectures have inspired audiences all around the world. This year, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first ascent of Everest, he has put together a new lecture tracing the mountain's story, from Mallory's 1921 attempt, through the triumphant 1953 expedition to the present day. A story of exploration and adventure, of mystery and controversy, of stretching the boundaries of human achievement, told by someone who has been there himself and added his own remarkable chapter to Everest's history.
