This lecture marks the publication of Professor Welch's new book on the theatre that has housed Ireland's National Theatre - the focus for the renaissance of drama witnessed by Ireland in the twentieth century. This is the first history of the Abbey to discuss the plays and personalities in their historical and political context. Robert Welch is Professor of English and Director of the Centre for Irish Literature and Bibliography, University of Ulster. He also edits The Oxford Companion to Irish Literature.
