AgrippinaHandel's 1710 opera shows the Italian influence on his work following his three and a half year stay in Italy. Claudius decrees that Otho, who has saved his life, will succeed him even though his wife Agrippina is scheming for Nero to take the throne. Agrippina uses Poppea, whom all three men admire, to set Claudius against Otho.
Music Handel
Lyrics Grimani (after Tacitus and Suetonius)

Fantastic! Whilst I found the lyrics a little repetative (I blame Handel - as the translation was great)the cast more than makes up for this with their fine performance skills. Sarah Connolly, Rebecca Evans and Christine Rice were superb. I could have listened to Rebecca all evening and Christine's singing was excellent whilst her coke sniffing had me in stitches. All three got a standing ovation from the part of the balcony I was in. I should also mention Lawrence Zazzo who had a fancinating voice and has introduced me to counter-tenors for the first time. (are they all that good?) The stage was, as is usual for the colesium, very well done. Not intruding on the performance but helping to create a fantastic show. I also have to mention the actor who did a show stopping "Dad dancing at a wedding" impression I don't know his name but we were impressed. Defintely go and see this
