GenovevaSiegfried's castle in Strasburg AD 730. Margareta offers to help Golo woo Genoveva, the wife of Count Siegfried, during the Count's absence. Rejected by Genoveva, Golo plants his friend Drago in her bedroom so that she can be accused of adultery. Golo then goes to tell Siegfried, who has been injured in battle, of his wife's infidelity. Siegfried orders his men to take her to a forest, where she is to be executed. Golo makes a final attempt to persuade Genoveva to run away with him. She refuses, but her life is saved by the arrival of Siegfried, who has now learnt the truth.
