Opera or Operetta :: Summer 1816. A stormy night by Lake Geneva. To while away the time, a house party of English visitors, including the poets Shelley and Byron, challenge one another to make up a ghost story. Some nights later Mary Shelley, the poet's young wife, has a nightmare which forms the basis for her story Frankenstein. "A story which would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature and awaken thrilling horror - one to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart." Mary Shelley. In exploring the early life of Mary Shelley, Monster recreates the world of Mary's imagination, piecing together fragments of memory and events which came together within the tale that became Frankenstein. This fascinating collaboration between Sally Beamish, whose Knotgrass Elegy was premièred at BBC Proms, and Glasgow writer Janice Galloway, author of The Trick Is To Keep Breathing, promises to be one of the musical events of the year.
