Pelleas et Melisande

Pelleas et MelisandeT807237972
Debussy's masterpiece, Pelleas et Melisande is based on Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist play and was first performed in 1902 at the Opera-Comique, Paris. A tragic fairy-tale, the opera recounts the ill-fated love of half-brothers Golaud and Pelleas for the same woman, the enigmatic Melisande.

The Daily Telegraph (11Jan01): Despite their best efforts, the cast failed to inject any emotional reality. [Felicity Hammond] s adequately sung Melisande just couldn t radiate the allure and mystery on which the plot is premised. [Karl Daymond] sounded uncomfortable as Pelleas and [David Gwynne] was a hammy old Arkel. At the end, the audience filed out in pious silence as though it had just endured some intolerably long and tedious church service. 2
