Magda's husband is hounded by the secret police and flees the country to escape the terrifying threats. Magda's fears, frustrations and lamentations are played out as she continually tries to see The Consul. Her desperate attempts to get a visa and re-unite her family show up how helpless she is to over come the authoritarian power. First performed 1 Mar 1950.
