A Celebration of Jane Austen

A Celebration of Jane AustenT1949422001
No writer, with the exception of Shakespeare, stands higher in public esteem and affection than Jane Austen. This celebration is for those who have always loved her, and for those who would like to know more about the enigmatic figure behind the popular image of bonnets, tea and gentility. Jane Austen continues to fascinate because she reveals human nature with all its delicious quirks and foibles. From the rumbustious delights of her juvenile works to the extraordinary vitality in her last and uncompleted novel, Sanditon, this production takes the audience on a colourful and revealing journey through the life and works of this most paradoxical and bewitching author.

Production details

Anton Rodgers is one of our most respected screen and stage actors with a string of successes to his name, including two hugely popular sitcoms, 'Fresh Fields' and 'May to December'. Actress Elizabeth Garvie gave what is considered to be the definitive portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in BBC TV's 'Pride and Prejudice'. Together, this husband and wife team present a delightful portrait of Jane Austen and her world, ably assisted by Christine Croshaw on the piano. You can spend a day in the company one of our most popular authors by watching the screening of 'Pride and Prejudice' in the afternoon, then attending this evening's portrait of Jane Austen. No writer - with the exception of William Shakespeare - stands higher in public esteem and affection than Jane Austen. This unique double celebration is for those who already love her work, and for those who would like to know more about the enigmatic and shadowy figure that lies behind the popular image of bonnets, tea and respectability. The latest film version of 'Pride and Prejudice' stars Keira Knightley and Matthew McFayden and is without doubt one of the most popular films that we have ever screened. This is your last chance to see the film that has captivated over 1000 people in Alnwick alone - or perhaps you'd like to enjoy it for the second time. Our day continues later in the evening, with a glimpse of Jane Austen's world, featuring her own words and a selection of music played at the piano by Christine Croshaw. Elizabeth Garvie is, of course, remembered for the definitive portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in the BBC's original production of 'Pride and Prejudice'. She is joined by her husband, Anton Rodgers, one of our most distinguished actors, who comes from his recent appearance in the West End production of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'
