Mozart's celestial masterpiece Die Zauberflote is more abstract and surreal than his other operas, and full of strange symbolism and ideas. What is their significance? What are their mathematical and philosophical roots? What is so special about the number three and the Masonic pentagon, and why might Mozart have been drawn to them? Marcus du Sautoy, one of today's leading thinkers, will explore the tension between order and chaos, symmetry and asymmetry, day and night, and much more in Die Zauberflote. This interactive evening will include performance of extracts from the opera.
