In the 1920s and 1930s Evans' work was savagely attacked by Welsh critics - he was known for a while in the Welsh press as "the best hated man in Wales" - but he can now be seen as perhaps the first genuine exponent of 'Anglo-Welsh literature'. Michael Kelligan looks at the 'State of the Nation' in his latest On the Edge season, offering a unique chance to discover or rediscover some outstanding plays that question ideas of national identity and 'Welshness'. Curated by critic David Adams, this series of rehearsed readings will be accompanied by extensive background notes, with the opportunity to discuss the plays afterwards.
