The Camden Town Group was a small, short-lived group of artists which flourished between about 1911 and 1914. Key members of the group were Walter Sickert, Harold Gilman, Charles Ginner, and Spencer Gore, and it was named after the area of London in which several of them lived and worked. Inspired by the work of artists like van Gogh, Gauguin and C?zanne, these painters adapted the Europeans' brilliant use of colour and energetic brushwork to very British subject matter, creating a vibrant visual style in the process. One of their principal subjects was London, and these artists were certainly interested in the fast-changing cityscape of glitzy modern buildings and spectacular new kinds of entertainment like the cinema; but they were also drawn to the quieter, more prosaic world of the suburbs, and occasionally their pictures focussed on the downright sleazy.
