East End Live Artist Kim Dexter is hoping to break the barrier between audience member and performer in her one to one performance The Invisible Skin Between Us. Deliberately low tech, and loosely structured, the piece makes space for the audience member's own contribution but does not insist upon it as so much 'participatory' theatre does. In alternating dark and light, the piece explores the theme of scars and the stories behind them as a testament to human fallibility, frailty and resilience. Equally though, the emphasis is also upon the interaction between the performer and the audience member and Kim states 'I am looking forward to the unpredictability of the encounter, the conversations that might happen and the tangents we might go off on. Whilst I will be working with a basic structure, I do not know what might happen within that, and in that sense I will be on an equal footing with the audience.' Kim has long been fascinated by site-specific work and performing for (deliberately) small audiences, feeling that both of these factors make for an intimate and thought provoking experience. Her last solo show 'You Were Here' took place in her own flat and was described by audience members as 'a very wonderful 'jewel' of a piece... something delicate, intimate and personal.' and 'the piece resonated with all the longing and beautiful sadness that you wanted to convey. It was very mysterious and playful too.' Whether 'The Invisible Skin Between Us' will elicit similar responses will be as much down to the participant as the performer.
