A Bold Stroke for a Husband

T518756242
We move to the heart of Spain for a brilliant comedy of the late 18th century. Don Carlos has abandoned his young wife and children in the country to resume his lothario lifestyle in Madrid. Donna Victoria, the forsaken wife, is not going to let go without a fight. She dresses as a man and makes love to Don Carlos' new mistress. The style and wit of the piece make it a joy. But in those times of burgeoning female emancipation, its deeper layers are as equally significant as those of Centlivre's play 65 years earlier. It was still being performed late into the 19th century; its discussion of the many themes including implications of cross-dressing, disguise, masquerade, and play-acting remaining timeless.
