An Expressionist Romance archiveIn its day Expressionist theatre violated the stale conventions of naturalism, breaking social taboos and upsetting the establishment. It left its mark on every aspect of culture and every form of theatre that has succeeded it. As a tribute to this legacy, students on the Avant Garde Theatre course present an expressionist extravaganza designed to assault the senses and stimulate the mind. This piece is created and performed by a cast of thirty and combines test from original expressionist plays as well as devised material, physical theatre and video. Creating a spectacle, both beautiful and grotesque in which savage desire stages a comeback smuggling itself through the TV screen. This is both an homage, remaining faithful to the aesthetic and philosophical principles of expressionist theatre, and re-constructive surgery, adding an adulterous, contemporary twist to the form.
