Couple of Comedies: Conversations with Barbara
T0747195898
An actress whose career has reached a cul de sac reluctantly takes up a job as a cleaner for an elderly, upmarket couple who live in a remote cottage in the middle of a common. Somewhere in between dry mopping floors and washing smalls with Sunlight Soap she finds herself immersed in the strangest set of roles she's ever played: Lady's Companion, attendant to a drunken gardener and a dog that won't bark, an imaginary private in the Royal Airforce, and a champion of squirrels - all in a house inspired by a thirties upbringing and stuck doggedly in the 1950's. Rebecca Denmark effortlessly inhabits each of the characters that frequent this tiny kingdom with extraordinary warmth, wit and sensitivity. Conversations with Barbara will make you laugh and cry in equal measure and, for a brief time brings, you back in touch with the Great Britain of a bygone age.
