It is the early 1630s and women in England are barred from the stage. In the sleazily glamorous world of London theatre, actor John Shank trains talented young boys to play female roles. When the theatre company that Shank invests in goes under and leaves him up to his eyes in debt, his only hope of escaping bankruptcy is to find a new star. Enter an unlikely 14-year-old wannabe, Stephen Hammerton.
