Gamblers, bookmakers, owners and horses jostle for position in Howard Brenton's biting, funny, fast-moving panoramic tour of Great Britain's public at the races. Nine actors playing more than fifty parts capture the raucous, fevered excitement of the Derby, where even shady tipsters and hard-headed bookies are weavers of dreams for an afternoon. First performed in 1977 to coincide with the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Howard Brenton's popular masterpiece has the power to capture the nation's imagination.
