When you play a solo, you have to tell a story. If you don't, it doesn't really mean anything - US jazz pianist, Horace Parlan. Suffering from a heart condition, the author of I spit on your graves entered the Parisian cinema to watch an adaptation of his own cult novel. Thirty minutes later, after shouting angrily at the screen, he was dead. Taking this incident as its starting point and partly inspired by the life of jazz critic, novelist and all round "serious man" Boris Vian, Told by an Idiot takes a freewheeling look at the nature of deception and the desire to live in the moment.
