King Lear archiveKing Lear divides his Kingdom between his daughters according to a declaration of their love for him. His eldest Goneril and Regan exaggerate their affection and inherit. His youngest daughter Cordelia speaks only the truth and is banished. So begins the tragedy of King Lear, whose dignity, sanity and finally life are torn from him by a self-seeking younger generation, ambitious for his power. What is love, what is madness, what is truth - Shakespeare explores these questions together with many others in King Lear, widely considered to be his greatest tragedy.

From Minsk, Belarus. One of the world s bravest ensembles, Belarus Free Theatre was established in 2005 by Nikolai Khalezin and Natalia Kaliada. The group has no official premises, nor any other facilities. Their performances in Belarus are held secretly, in small private apartments, the location of which, due to the risk of persecution, must constantly be changed. In their work, they demonstrate a spiritual resilience and an irreverent humour in the face of their own dilemma. Despite suffering every form of intimidation and harassment, BFT continue to produce great theatre that is recognised internationally. Performed in Belarusian. Contains nudity.Company Belarus Free Theatre. Performer Aleh Sidorchyk (King Lear). Performer Yana Rusakevich (Goneril). Performer Maryna Yurevich (Regan). Performer Viktoriyia Biran (Cordelia). Young People's Shakespeare - T314374686

A royal family gather for Christmas. The father broadcasts his seasonal message: he's giving up work and dividing his kingdom. With this misjudged act the natural order is upturned and the scene is set for a story of family break-up, homelessness and heartbreak. In this new edited version, King Lear is brought vibrantly to life for schools, families and younger audiences. Stripped down to 75 minutes, the production is a thrilling and accessible introduction to one of the greatest plays ever written. The RSC return to the Theatre Royal with this Young People's Shakespeare production following the success of YPS Hamlet in 2011.Company Royal Shakespeare Company. Director Tim Crouch. Performed in English and Mandarin (with surtitles in both languages). [David Tse Ka-Shing] transposes the action of King Lear to London and Shanghai in 2020. The business world has shifted and China is the leading superpower. Corporate money and power protect a privileged elite who live above the law. Lear looks out from his penthouse across Shanghai's financial district. He has called a video-conference to decide how his global business empire will be divided amongst his three daughters. Greed and the desire for control leads to a trail of deceit, betrayal, lust and murder. As Lear suffers and searches for Taoist enlightenment, what hope is there for love?Company Yellow Earth Theatre. Company Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. Director David Tse Ka-Shing.
