King of Edge Hill

T1815422031
In the middle of the 19th Century self-made Joseph Williamson dug over 13 miles of tunnels under Liverpool. He did it to give work to the unemployed. Buy why tunnels? Karen Brown has probed deep into the psyche of this man, concentrating on his marriage to Elizabeth Tate. The man who married the boss' daughter became the Mole of Edge Hill, a strange figure, out of step with the Victorian ideals. But what of his wife? How did she survive marriage to this man who seemed to look back at a golden age of rural squirearchy while literally burying his head in the sandstone of Edge Hill?
