L'Arrobbafumu

T785063456
This play is Francesco Suriano's last chapter in the trilogy of Roccu with Calabria at the centre of this investigation. Individual stories are related to the history of 20th century Italy, with emphasis placed upon political, social, and cultural conditions. In L'Arrobbafuma the author searches to communicate how a region like Calabria has been left so far behind the rest of Western Europe. The last text in the trilogy of Roccu, L'Arrobbafumu, recounts the true story of an event that occurred in Palmi during August of 1925, a story that became known as I fatti della Varia. Ever present in the background of the story is the moderate but growing presence of the Fascist Party in the district of Reggio Calabria. During a religious festival, a conflict arises between the citizens and the fascists as to which music should be played. The conflict escalates, an uproar begins and Roccu dies in the piazza, killed by the fascists. Three years on the Court of the State in Rome is called to judge the case of thirty-three men accused of attacking the Fascist State. The men are accused of taking part in a subversive project that, starting with Palmi, intended to spread itself all over Italy. Following the verdict, a member of the Communist Party dies mysteriously in the jail of Santo Stefano. Like Roccu, he is a martyr. This is a story that has imprinted upon the memories of the Southerners because it touches upon beliefs that are important to our country: religion, fascism, and the left.
