Overall:
3.50The Telegraph (11Jan01): Even in this lacklustre staging, in which plodding competence is far more in evidence than explosive sexual chemistry, the play still exerts a tremendous grip. 3
The Times (11Jan01): [Christopher Hampton] s fine adaptation of Laclos s epistolary novel has waited a long time for a decent revival. It gets precisely that from [Peter Wilson]. There is always a fascination in seeing evil at work, and an erotically charged plot is hardly calculated to lessen it. [Clive Wood] catches all Valmont s suave assurance and macho complacency. [Siobhan Redmond] gives us not only the Marquise s trademark poise but the restless anger beneath. It s a performance well worth catching. 4
