Bessie is the sole carer for her post-stroke father and invalid aunt when she discovers she has leukaemia. Her sister, Lee, who has been out of contact for years arrives with her two sons hoping one might be a bone marrow donor for Bessie. Lee feels that devoting her life to caring for aging relatives would be to waste it. Lee has enough trouble being a mother to her two sons, particularly Hank, who has been committed to a mental hospital after burning down the family home. Bessie may not find a cure for her leukaemia, but the state of healing occurs in the play as she helps both Hank and Lee to care for each other.
