Merman explores the world of children's imagination and the myth that a group of children create around a physically disabled man as a means of dealing with the unfamiliar. Set in a remote fishing village, Merman marries the folklore of the sea with sorcery to create an enchanting story which succeeds in dealing sensitively with the subject of disability.
