Once in a While an Odd Thing Happens

T0
'I was attracted by the force and beauty of Britten's music. There was an obvious drama in the existence of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears as the first visible homosexual couple to gain any acceptance in modern British society.' We follow Britten and Pears from the start of their relationship before the Second World War, across the Atlantic to their time as 'accidental refugees' in the USA from 1939 - 1942, and back to England, culminating in the production of Peter Grimes in June 1945. The acerbic wit of the poet W.H.Auden and the love and support of Britten's sister Beth intercut their voyage of self-discovery. Paul Godfrey's text has a spare, poetic beauty: the play resonates with humour and emotional strength beyond its historical characters. 'Lyrical, poetic prose, sinuous, swift, eloquent and dramatic.'
