Rife with disease and war, the wilderness of 17th Century Kentish Marsh breeds people as hard as they come. In the fits of a raging storm a shipwrecked man is dragged four and a half miles to be left in the care of two eccentric peasant sisters, Rebecca and Tess Cowley. With no memory of his past, the girls help him create an identity reflecting their own hopes and desires. Is this stranger's presence darker than they could have envisaged?
