Romeo and Juliet

T1451663581
The story of frustrated young (illegally young in modern terms) love and death and the vendetta between two families in a tight-knit Italian community. One of Shakespeare's most popular and enduring dramas it has also been re-done as film, ballet, musical (most notably "West Side Story") and ice spectacular!

Production details

Two families at war. Why? Homophobia. The Montagues bear an 'ancient grudge' against the Capulets' employment of a gay transvestite Nurse. The Capulets begin a 'new mutiny' in response to Romeo, the Montagues' lesbian daughter, coming out. Against this background Juliet and Romeo meet...Theirs is a love that dare not speak its name in a climate of prejudice, hatred, and violence. The result - inevitable? This interpretation cleverly challenges many preconceptions about the play and its characters, giving a disturbingly relevant setting to the story of forbidden love.
