A black comedy about a small community in a changing world. St Martin's, Isles of Scilly 1939, Mr Clemmow, the island post master is dead. Reluctantly, his son-in-law Vic Oliver prepares to take on the mantle of responsibility for the island's communication with the outside world. The installation of a new telegraph machine brings the world closer to St Martin's than ever before. As Britain teeters on the brink of war, a Post Office official arrives from the mainland and Vic is forced to take drastic action in order to preserve the precarious integrity of life on St Martin's.
