Tchaikovsky and the Queen of Spades archiveFor thirteen years Tchaikovsky's genius was paid for by his wealthy patroness, Madame Von Meck. Extraordinary though it may seem they never met. Theirs was a platonic love affair based on a mutual passion - music. Then suddenly, without warning, the money stopped. The composer was devastated by this withdrawal of love. In this same period, Tchaikovsky was composing his opera, The Queen of Spades, taken from the story by Pushkin. The hero, Herman, is torn between his love for Lisa and his obsession with gambling, and in particular with his attempts to prise from an ageing Countess the secret of The Three Cards, the three cards that will beat the bank and ensure riches for ever...
