For thirteen years Tchaikovsky's genius was paid for by his wealthy patroness, Madame Von Meck. Extraordinary though it may seem they never met. Theirs was a platonic love affair based on a mutual passion - music. Then suddenly, without warning, the money stopped. The composer was devastated by this withdrawal of love. In this same period, Tchaikovsky was composing his opera, The Queen of Spades, taken from the story by Pushkin.
