The Father archiveThe Father was written during Strindberg's marriage break-up and his distress and imaginings are reflected in the play. Prominent among his attitudes is that, in the struggle for dominance, a strong woman will destroy the man - the essence of the plot of The Father. When Laura struggles to assert her authority over her household and her daughter the only thing standing in her way is an old Captain - her husband.
