The Gaza Mono-Logues

Oxford's Pegasus Theatre has been chosen to take part in a performance that will take place simultaneously in 40 cities around the world at 7pm on Sunday 17th October 2010. This massive project, The Gaza Mono-Logues, has been created by Iman Aoun, Artistic Director of ASHTAR Theatre in Palestine in support of the young people living in Gaza. In December 2008 and January 2009 over 22 days, the Gaza strip was bombed by Israeli forces. 1,380 Palestinians were killed, 431 of whom were children. A further 1,872 children were wounded. The experience left the young people with more than visible scars. During a series of workshops with ASHTAR Theatre, thirty 14 to 16 year olds were able to express their dreams, fears and experiences before and after the attack - these have become the Gaza Mono-Logues. The stories have been translated into English, French and Spanish and distributed to partner organisations in more than 20 countries, where they will be interpreted in performance by other young people. In each country the performance will start at 7pm local time and so travel around the world starting and ending in Palestine. Pegasus is the only UK venue involved in this momentous event. At least 16 of the Gaza monologues will be recited by the Pegasus Theatre Company interspersed with a dance response from young people in the Dance Company. The show will begin and end with a sound and light interpretation by the Production Company. There will be a talkback after the performance with Oxford residents from Palestine and the performers.
