Based on the novel Washington Square by Henry James. First performed in 1949 at the Haymarket Theatre London, directed by John Gielgud and starring Peggy Ashcroft, Ralph Richardson and Donald Sinden. At twenty two, Catherine Sloper is neither clever nor beautiful, but to her delight she finds herself courted by the handsome and charming Morris Townsend. But is it her good and gentle heart that he desires, or her inheritance? For her father, Doctor Sloper, separating his daughter from her lover is a duty, a challenge and an entertainment...

USER (11Jan01): Perhaps it was the end of a long run, but to be honest the acting was unconvincing. But then, this is a light comedy and so a lack of depth in the acting was not too bad. 2
