Sir Charles is under the thumb of his monstrous wife, Lady Beauclair, and her drunken daughter Peggy. Meanwhile his niece is falling in love with the debauched rake Sir Francis Wildlove. Vibrant characters abound in the shape of ne'er-do-wells Cheatall, Lyewell and Spendall. But it is the women who have the upper hand as Belinda (Sir Charles's platonic mistress) has to try and save him from his hopeless marriage.
