Gotharus was one of the most sinister machiavellians to appear on the stage in the 1630s. In his attempt to gain control of Norway he woos Marpisa, the wily wife of the King, and is outwitted by her guile and a plot of his own making. It is here that the shoemaker makes a triumphant, albeit cameo, appearance!
