Washboard Blues

Washboard Blues is set in the 1950s. A group of women meet each week to do their washing and to talk about their lives. One of the women, Lily, has an ambition to be a singer in the glamorous world of clubland. She sings the songs of the 50s and might be heading for stardom. However, Lonnie Donegan and Elvis Presley are hovering in the wings, and it may be too late for Lily to get her big break. The play is full of songs which remind us of Guy Mitchell and Alma Cogan, as well as the everyday concerns of women living in the North of England just after the war.
