When the Wind Blows

T0951850243
Jim and Hilda Bloggs, a retired couple, have moved to an isolated country cottage in the South East of England. They are decent, houseproud and behind the times. Jim hears on the radio that a pre-emptive strike is to be expected. With his government leaflets as his guide, he constructs a refuge for them both and gathers together emergency rations. Jim and Hilda emerge after the Bomb to find a devastated post-nuclear holocaust world. Expecting the Powers-That-Be to rescue them, they wait. Their bodies suffer the effect of radiation sickness and they drift gently into the dark, loving each other and uttering fragments of prayer. Though the threat of Armageddon is mercifully behind us, this tale is clever, credible, but ultimately heart-breaking.
