An eighteen year old on his first day at work encounters the tangled web of other people's lives through the rich texture of the interlocking stories of his co-workers. His own coming-of-age is a journey through cruelty and laughter, sexual intrigue, racism, bullying, homophobia, the closed shop and trade unions.
