An Anatomy of the Bionic Body

Melding advanced computers with the human nervous system is bringing about a remarkable convergence of biology and technology. By linking neurons in the brain directly to silicon chips, scientists are exploring the possibility of creating virtual eyes, ears and limbs on the Web and allowing people to control appliances through thought alone. What might we learn about brain function from these experiments? Speakers include: Brian Eno, musician, artist and futurist; Steve Grand, a leading exponent of artificial life, described by The Sunday Times as one of the 18 scientists most likely to revolutionise our lives; and James Geary, author of the Body Electric and an editor of Time Magazine. In the chair is Daniel Glaser, scientist-in-residence at the ICA and senior research fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, UCL. The talk will be followed by a hands-on demonstration of some of the technologies behind the new bionic senses, including computers which transmit smells over the internet and allow users to feel virtual objects. Lucy, Steve Grand's robot, will also be in attendance.
